So, like Jack, here are a few responses. 1. Died of his refusal to seek medical treatment - reminds me of the equally narrow medical assessment of Simone Weil's death - that she simply refused to eat. I sit with many dying people - they die of neglect, sorrows, because they wish to, because it is their time......the list is endlessly rich. 2. Ah, the desirability of limits - in common culture the all you can eat buffet, the ability and encouragement to binge watch programming, and in Canada, the push to gamble at every opportunity has normalized excess. Limiting of any kind appears self righteous. Wild. 3. Yes, yes, yes, Illich speaks often of the Christian practices of contemplation and reflection to offer a ballast to the all encompassing avarice. 4. Illich dwells, as you write, in the liminal, which is where hope lies, I think. 5. Are you familiar with Bayo Akomolafe's writings on The Trickster? It is central to his thought. 6. And I have long been thinking of the madness that there are now technological universities that do not so much as suggest the wisdom traditions should be a consideration. Illich, whose thought has seeped into my thinking along with others, knew the importance of the spiritual traditions as being foundational to the gathering of knowledge. I am watching in my own country the Medical Assistance in Dying pandemic across Canada in horror. It is not the availability of it that alarms me. In the same way I think abortion should be an option, so should MAID. But it is not accompanied by spiritual exploration, contemplative practices, the traditions of deep knowing, the understanding of suffering that offers wisdoms not imagined. 7. Illich was controversial in his time because he refused to set his boots to one camp or the other. And, as I am remembering now, Simone Weil refused also - not willing to join the church proper as she did not wish to be separated by all those where were 'outside it.' It occurs to me that those thinkers I find interesting - and you are one of them - will not be coerced into a pen like so much livestock. Good for you. Keep exploring your thought, it is a marvel to watch you wander. It is, in fact, the way forward for all of us. Every blessing, Candice

I didn't think I needed more Illich, but I clearly did. And now I crave more of that clarity of vision. 3 completely random comments: 1. How can 1 man be so right about everything? 2. My G-d, he is a stunningly handsome man. 3. Re: "New Gods," this Nick Cave lyric has been stuck in my head all week- "Now, who are these gods that you now defend?/And what purpose do they serve now, at the end of time?"
