Ah, tricky to choose! But maybe start with the Stone Book Quartet (four stories about four generations of his family), then either dive back into the earlier novels that were published on children's lists (The Owl Service is probably my favourite, if I had to choose) or onwards into the later novels, which are tightly structured masterpieces (Strandloper and Thursbitch would be my recommendations). Finally, look out for The Voice That Thunders, a collection of talks and essays that had a huge influence on me.
With Illich, start with the first collaboration with David Cayley, Ivan Illich in Conversation, which will give an introduction to the man and his work, then use that to work out which books you want to dive into. (Shadow Work is one that I find myself coming back to especially often.)
What would be your recommended “start here” book for Garner? (Or Illich for that matter!)

Have fun!
Yet another soul-stirring post. Thanks!
